«I want to speak today on various kinds of pre-philosophical knowledge […] I have come to think that one of the things that is regularly forgotten when the matter of basic moral knowledge is at issue is the simple fact that each of us began as a baby. All too often, we adopt the odd tendency to think of ourselves as isolated individuals who somehow just arrive on the scene as adults and begin to ask questions in a language we also forget we learned at our mother’s knee […] Parents do not confer on us the capacity to grasp moral truths; they appeal to it as something we already have and gradually manifest. When a mother asks, “How would you like it if someone did that to you?” she expects and gets a recognition from her child. Is she teaching him the Golden Rule? Only in the sense that she teaches him English, presupposing the capacity to speak».
